Preparing for Marriage:

One of the great blessings of parish life is the assistance we render couples who plan to marry.
Marriage Preparation involves four stages outlined below:

STAGES OF MARRIAGE PREPARATION

The various periods of marriage preparation cannot be rigidly defined. The Pontifical Council for the Family, in Preparation for the Sacrament of Marriage (PSM), offers the following periods of preparation:
I. Remote Preparation - a lifelong process.
II. Proximate Preparation - the year before the wedding.
III. Immediate Preparation - two months before the wedding.

At first glance this can seem daunting. However if you examine the elements of each stage, you will find that this process insures that the couple begins their marriage with adequate preparation. We all know that the divorce rate is a challenge to our society and the stability of family life as well as a challenge to our parish life. At the heart of God’s plan for the human race is the family. In this community of persons children are born, grow, and learn what is necessary to be ‘human’ in all of the various dimensions that being ‘human’ entails. Parents too discover their true identity in this loving communion of persons. When you add the dimension of Sacramental Grace that comes to all the baptized when they marry you can see that adequate preparation is essential.  However many couples ask us to remove one or another of the requirements that preparation includes here in the Diocese of Colorado Springs. Only  Bishop Sheridan or our chancellor, Msgr. Ricardo Coronado-Arrascue can approve altering the policy.
You can see our complete diocesan policy at the following link: http://www.diocs.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=_IZQe3zLgTA%3d&tabid=108&mid=809

Marriage is certainly one of the highest if not the highest vocation in human life. It provides the greatest challenges and the greatest joys. Couples must work out their salvation through one another as they are now ‘one flesh’

Msgr. Jaeger and all of us who serve parish life here at St. Paul’s are ready to assist couples in any way that we can do so without compromising the requirements of our mission in the Church.
