This summer I asked for a small group to design a painting that could be placed in the front of the church.
The purpose was to bring color to the altar, so when you enter the back of the church, your eyes are drawn up to wonder at the colors, gleaming gold, and streaming light to the tabernacle, our focus for coming to Worship. The committee agreed to use the vibrant colors of the stain glass windows around the church to accent and bring the church together. The use of blue is the sky or heaven; white: humility, purity of life; gold: holiness of life; green: triumph of life over death; and golden yellow: the bounty of God. All these colors and some religious symbols were incorporated into a painting of willow trees. The willow tree is mentioned several times in the Bible. The leaves represent the balance, harmony, and growth we experience through storms and life challenges. The tree gives us hope, a sense of belonging and safety, to let go of pain and suffering to grow new, strong, and bold. Monsignor and the committee hope that these paintings will guide spiritual reflection as you spend time with The Lord.
I want to thank those involved in this collaborative effort, Reveille Kennedy, Mercie Curbow, Evon Peterson and Alice Munsch for their time and talent!
