Fr. Chance first entered the Seminary for the Diocese of San Diego after graduating from SDSU in 1988 and went onto St. Michaels Minor and St. John’s Major Theology in California. In 1990 he left the seminary to discern the vocation of marriage. During this discernment he worked with St. Vincent de Paul Village and utilized his degree in communication. St. Vincent de Paul Village became Fr. Joe's Village, a large homeless agency which serves both Palm Springs and San Diego. For nearly ten years he serves as its Public, Creative and Communications Relations Director producing all of its philanthropic requests, commercials, television shows, and public events. It is through the highly charismatic priest and president of this organization, Fr. Joe Carroll, that he learned the greatest lessons of compassion, charity, self-sacrifice and leadership.
Fr. Chance has worked with many community and faith leaders, including mayors, governors, housing and port commissioners, planning departments, newsroom editors, pastors and other homeless advocates. He has brought many diverse groups of people together to celebrate the Catholic faith through community events including: Christmas Tree lightings, Health Fairs, art exhibits, and Kensington's 100th Anniversary. He has a profound love for people and understands the value of reaching out to those who are in need. He is committed to improving the world where he lives, seeking out opportunities to share the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
After 10 years of working for a non-profit, 4 years for large corporations, 14 years in his own business and 17 years as an instructor and college professor, Fr. Chance felt that Our Mother Mary was calling him back to the priesthood. All of the experiences he was fortunate enough to obtain were all part of God's providential care and Fr. Chance reentered the Seminary in 2015 for the Diocese of Honolulu. In 2017 he transferred to the Diocese of Colorado Springs so that he could join his Mother, Father, Stepmother, youngest Brother and family who all reside locally. Fr. Chance graduated from Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland in May of 2019 and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on May 30, 2019 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Colorado Springs. “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? ’Here I am,’ I said; ‘send me!” - Isaiah 6:1-13. Fr. Chance looks forward to serving the parish of St. Paul. May God's will be done.
